BASARA Volume 7 - Azure Chapter 7: The Cursed Forest

Notes:

-I tried to make the translations as literal as possible, but certain liberties were taken in order to make some of the dialogue sound more natural. And there are a few parts I did not know how to translate, so I guessed at the meaning. Those parts are marked with an (*). Just keep in mind these are far from 100% correct or perfect. If you see a translation mistake, please let me know.

-The following should be read with manga in hand. These are only the dialogue. There are no mentions of scene changes, nor what the characters are actually doing. So you may be confused if you don't have the manga in front of you. If you don't have the manga, I've posted an overall summary describing what happened in this chapter along with some translated manga scans. So check that out.

Azure Chapter 7 - The Cursed Forest

[100]

Chigusa: Tatara!
Khazan: Men!
Khazan: Escort this woman safely into the mountains.
Soldiers: Eh...yes.
Khazan: I can't bear for you to witness your son's death.
Khazan: Please get away from here.

[101]

Chigusa: Have I...
Chigusa:
Have I gone mad?
Chigusa:
If I had escape at that time,
Chigusa: Ah...
Chigusa:
...I wouldn't be such a burden to my daughter.
Chigusa: Tatara!
Chigusa: Forget about me! Leave this place!
Chigusa:
Please help my Sarasa.
Chigusa: Tatara!
Chigusa:
That child is just a girl.

[102]

Chigusa: She's only a 15-year-old girl.
Chigusa: AHHH.
Khazan: Forgive me, Miss Chigusa.
Tatara: Mother?! Mother!
Zaki: Get back, Tatara.

[103]

Khazan: I won't hold back any longer.

[104]

Tatara: General Khazan!
Khazan: I don't know how many times I've faced you.
Khazan: But this will surely be the last.
Tatara: Mother...
Tatara: What did you do with my mother?
Khazan: Well.
Khazan: What good would it do for you to know before impending death?*
Tatara: What?
Cha-Cha: Tatara.
Cha-Cha: This is too much for you to handle.

[105]

Cha-Cha: This man will be my adversary.
Tatara: Cha-Cha!
Cha-Cha: You should go search for your mother.
Cha-Cha: Zaki! Go with Tatara!
Zaki: Cha-Cha!
Cha-Cha: I don't want to hear it.
Cha-Cha: Same goes for everyone! Understand!
Shouta: Boss...
Cha-Cha: Tatara can't be killed.

[106]

Cha-Cha: I didn't tell Tatara about Khazan and his mother.
Cha-Cha:
This is all my fault.
Khazan: It's all the same whoever my opponent is.
Khazan: With that many of you...
Khazan: Attack!

[107]

Tatara: Mother. Mother.
Tatara:
My brother's enemy is right there.
Tatara:
But I can't reach him.

[108]

Tatara: Asagi.
Asagi: Still... bothered by death and bloodshed?*
Tatara: Asagi, you're probably the strongest fighter here.
Tatara: Go help everyone else!
Asagi: Okay.
Asagi: I'll be happy to slaughter the Red Army.
Asagi: Move! Get outta my way!

[109]

Asagi: It's such a pity,
Asagi: ...the Red King isn't here!
Hayato: Asagi's really good.
Shouta: Don't look away, Hayato!
Tatara: Cha-Cha! Cha-Cha!
Tatara: Let me fight Khazan!
Khazan: I'll be happy to grant his wish.*
Cha-Cha: Stay right there!
Cha-Cha: I won't let you lay one finger on Tatara.

[110]

Khazan: Then prepare to die, woman.
Cha-Cha: Same to you.

[111]

Khazan: I won't go easy on you just because you're a woman!
Tatara: Cha-Cha!

[112]

Shuri: Go!
Shuri: Get all that up the moutain quickly!
Shuri: I want everything done by tonight!
Shuri: Hurry up!
Sakaki: Your Highness, please wait.
Shuri: What is it, Sakaki?
Shuri: Get back to the ship!
Sakaki: Please stop what you're doing.
Sakaki: Don't go after General Khazan!
Sakaki: Even I can see that,
Sakaki: ...there is no one more faithful than the General. He's been a splendid military commander.
Sakaki: You shouldn't kill him!

[113]

Shuri: I've given that man many chances.
Shuri: If he'd brought Tatara's mother to me, everything would have been fine.
Shuri: It's a crime for him to keep such things from me!
Sakaki: If he did as he was told,
Sakaki: ...would you have spared her (Tatara's mother)?
Shuri: Of course not!
Shuri: She's the woman who brought Tatara to this world!

[114]

Shuri: I don't want to talk about this anymore! Go back!
Sakaki: Your Highness!
Sakaki:
Shido's death,
Sakaki:
...must have hurt you greatly.
Ashou: He seldom approves when you get in his way, Lord Sakaki.
Sakaki: Lord Ashou.
Ashou: Day by day, the King becomes more severe to his subjects.
Ashou: The General noticed it too. This goes to prove his point.*
Sakaki: Lord Ashou...
Shuri: Hurry.
Shuri: Hurry to Motomiya, Kumano!

[115]

Shuri: That's right. This is hotspring country...
Shuri:
But I probably won't see Sarasa here...
Messenger: Red King.
Shuri: How are things from the top (of the mountain)?
Messenger: Very serious, Sir... If things are what I think they are...
Shuri: What is it! Hurry up and tell me.
Messenger: The General is currently engaged in battle with Tatara!

[116]

Tatara: Cha-Cha!
Tatara: Hayato! Where are you?
Tatara:
I have to get through.
Tatara:
But I don't know which way to go.
Tatara: Cha-Cha!
Tatara:
Every...
Tatara:
...body...!
Tatara:
I'm not fit to fight the General.
Tatara:
I couldn't rescue my mother.
Tatara:
And yet...

[117]

Tatara: I put everyone in danger!

[118]

Red Soldier: It's Tatara!
Red Soldier: I've got him.
Zaki: Tatara!
Tatara:
Mother.

[119]

Red Soldier: WHAAA.
Zaki: Tatara.
Nachi: Nachi and the Tengu have officially arrived!
Nachi: We'll take care of things here. Hurry up and get out!

[120]

Tatara: I can't! Khazan... My mother...
Nachi: Dumbass!
Nachi: You still don't get it! Our plan failed.
Nachi: Now take the time and get out!
Nachi: So long as you survive, you'll get another chance.
Nachi: Go!
Nachi: It's the same thing with me and that whale...
Nachi: There'll be a hundred more chances for me to catch it.
Tatara: Wakadanna...
Zaki: This way, Tatara!
Tatara: Zaki.
Tatara: What about Cha-Cha...

[121]

Tatara: Gunpowder?!
Tatara: Zaki!
Tatara: Get down!

[122]

Zaki: Tatara.
Zaki: What a crazy fool! This kid actually protected me.
Zaki: Are you alright?

[123]

Tatara: Uh.
Tatara: My eyes...
Tatara: My eyes...
Zaki: I see.
Zaki: You need to get them treated quickly.
Nachi: Goddamn!
Nachi: Where's all the cannons coming from?!
Tengu member: WHAA.
Tatara: Zaki...hurry...go find Cha-Cha...
Zaki: Cha-Cha told me to look after you.
Zaki: Now hold on to me!*

[124]

Red Army: AHHH.
Red Soldier: Who is it?
Red Soldier: Where are they firing from?
Zaki: Where?
Zaki: Where's the exit?

[125]

Zaki: Asagi.
Zaki: Take Tatara.

[126]

Zaki: Cha-Cha.

[127]

Hijiri: KAAAH.
Hijiri: This country,
Hijiri: ...is a cursed land right now.*

[128]

Zaki: Hijiri.
Hijiri: Zaki, that would have been the sacrifice of a noble warrior. But aren't you overdoing the valiant act?
Hijiri: Save it for the stage.*
Hijiri: Listen up!
Hijiri: Right now, the Red King is bombing this place with cannons!
Hijiri: You're a fool if you think he's here to help!
Hijiri: He's neither your friend nor your foe! All he wants is to annihilate the whole place.
Hijiri: This compound is already surrounded by a sea of fire.
Hijiri: Those who want to escape can run away.
Hijiri: But those who want to stay and fight will have to face me.
Hijiri: So come on! I hail from...
Hijiri: ...the birth place of the Great Musashi!*

(Musashi is a legendary Japanese hero.)

[129]

Hijiri: Go! Tatara.
Tatara:
Red King...?! The Red...King.
Zaki: AH!
Zaki: This is...
Zaki: ...a mountain of flames.

[130]

Soldiers: Fire!
Soldiers: Fire!
Shuri: Open the gate!
Shuri: Open the gate!
Man: This is private property! The Emperor resides here.
Shuri: I know that!
Shuri: I came to see my father (the Emperor).
Shuri: I'm his worthless son, the Red King.

[131]

Shuri: I'm going after a few rebels.
Shuri: Just wanted to let you know that this is a private matter! A few fireworks may fly about.
Shuri: But there's no need for you to interfere! Understand?
Servant: What private matter?
Servant: Do you intend to burn down Kumano?
Emperor: He's gone too far this time...*

[132]

Shuri: Should I go see the Black King too?
Sakaki: Your Highness.
Sakaki: Is General Khazan's subjugation,
Sakaki: ...simply your excuse to burn down Kumano?

Kumano is an important place to the Emperor.*
This sacred land is used extensively for trade.
It's practically the Emperor's treasury.
It represents old traditions.
Being the base for many monk warriors, it also holds a mighty military power.

Shuri: Who gave you that idea?
Shuri: I'm only after Khazan.
Shuri: But,
Shuri: ...I can't help it,
Shuri: ...if the fire spreads to the Shrine. Hahaha...
Sakaki:
Just as I thought,
Sakaki:
...such a horrifying method.

[133]

Tatara's lost companions: Nagi-sama!
Tatara's lost companions: The top of that mountain is burning! And it's spreading quickly.
Tatara's lost companions: Ah! Yato! Wait!
Nagi: Let's follow Yato.
Tatara's lost companions: Nagi-sama.
Nagi:The origin of that fire must be Motomiya.
Zaki: Hang on Tatara.
Zaki: Here's an alley.
Zaki: Let's go in there.

[134]

Girl: Who are you?
Zaki: We may look suspicious but...
Zaki:
We mean you no harm.
Woman's voice: Kikune, what is it?
Kikune (aka Girl): My Lady.

[135]

Woman: What is the matter?
Zaki: I'm sorry to intrude into your yard. But I only mean to pass through.
Zaki: I need to get this injured person to safety.
Woman: Kikune, show them the way to the back gate.
Kikune: Yes.

[136]

Zaki: Thank you.
Woman: Asagi.
Woman: Isn't that lovely child...Tatara?
Asagi: ...Yes, my White Lady.
Asagi: I mean...White King.

[137]

White King (aka Woman): And how is my cute little Asagi?
White King: I hope the mummy-hunter hasn't turned into a mummy himself.

(This whole "mummy" line is actually an odd proverbial Japanese expression. It refers to Asagi's role as an undercover mole pretending to be one of Tatara's followers. The White King senses that Asagi - while trying to bring down Tatara from within - may become so attached to the people he lives with as to become one of the rebels himself. - Much thanks to David Rowe-Caplan for the translation help.)

Asagi: Me? Of course not.
Asagi: Everything is going just fine.
Asagi: All this,*
Asagi: ...is for your sake.*
Zaki: Tatara, are you okay? We'll stay here for a while.
Soldiers: Where's Tatara?
Soldiers: He escaped over there.
Zaki: They're persistent.

[138]

Zaki: Tatara, I'm going to borrow this.
Zaki: I'll bring it back.
Zaki: Here is Tatara!
Zaki: This way!
Soldier: There.
Soldier: After him.
Tatara:
It's hot...
Tatara:
My eyes are burning.
Tatara:
Shuri...help me...

[139]

Tatara: Yato...? Yato.
Tatara: Yato...
Hijiri: Hang on. Keep your eyes closed.
Hijiri: A doctor is coming.
Tatara:
Doctor...? Everyone is... Cha-Cha...
Tatara: Zaki.
Hijiri: He went back to Khazan's compound, disguised as you...
Hijiri: ...just before it burned down.

[140]

Tatara: He went to rescue Cha-Cha!
Tatara: I need to go.
Hijiri: Are you crazy?!
Hijiri: Not in your condition.
Hijiri: That man went back in order to save you.
Hijiri: It's all for your sake.
Hijiri: If you go risk your life, he would have died a futile death.
Hijiri: You need to go see a doctor!
Tatara: A futile...death...
Tatara: No!
Hijiri: What? What are you saying?
Tatara:
I...
Tatara: That's wrong!
Hijiri: What?
Tatara:
...haven't the strength...
Hijiri: Every warrior risks his life in battle.
Hijiri: Honor him! He fought for you to the end!

[141]

Tatara: I haven't the strength to go.
Tatara: At what time,
Tatara: ...for whose sake,
Tatara: ...is death ever justifiable?
Tatara: Am I so wrong?

[142]

Tatara: Am I?
Tatara: Yato!
Tatara: Yato!

[143]

Hijiri: Tatara, stop!
Hijiri: I can't allow you to...
Hijiri: Your eyes. They'll be ruined!
Hijiri: You're crazy!

[144]

Cha-Cha: Zaki...
Cha-Cha:
Is Tatara safe?
Cha-Cha:
...Really?
Cha-Cha:
That's good.
Cha-Cha:
You know, I did my best too.
Cha-Cha:
Zaki...
Cha-Cha:
I always thought I would die at sea.
Cha-Cha:
Who would have guessed it would be here, in the middle of a mountain...
Khazan: This is the end, woman. You fought well.

[146]

Tatara: Cha-Cha. Zaki.
Tatara:
Don't die.
Tatara:
Don't die.
Tatara:
Please don't die.
